The next revolution of photography

The concept of photography has changed the perception of the way people see the world. The introduction of Digital Photography has brought a new dimension to the community of photographers.

The revolution happened when the concept of advanced technology met the field of photography. So we can say here that the next revolution in the world of photography is computational.

So we can see that with the course of time the concept of photography has developed a drastic change. And in the shadow of advanced technology, the revolution is growing and evolving.

Factors responsible for the change

There came a time when the world stopped talking about girls and boys and started to show more interest in men and women. The same happened in the world of photography.

Photography was at its “puberty” period when the technology was developing from analog to digital. Due to this great leap in technology, the introduction of the digital camera took place and changed the concept of photography permanently to the world.

Due to this advancement of technology mobile device faced a great impact.  Human Brain is a very diverse entity. Within a very short time after the invention of the digital camera, people’s imagination reached beyond the restriction of two dimensions.

So three dimensional or 3D concept came into the world, This concept helped us to look and perceive the world in a more realistic way. Therefore, digital photography became the vessel for immeasurable volumes of information that can operate in multiple dimensions.

What are the effects of this revolution?

As with the introduction of digital photography or imagery, people tend to use their mobile camera rather than using an actual digital camera.

The people realized the impact of this revolution when they saw that most of the people around the globe are likely to click photographs with their mobile phones rather than using a proper DSLR camera.

The sales of DSLR cameras reduced to a greater extent and only justification for this is the rise of smartphones. So you can say it took about 5 years to change the whole mindset of people about photography.

Another reason you can say responsible for this change is the ease of use of mobile devices. Youngsters feel it more comfortable to use their phones to click images as they directly share those clicked pictured with their friends on social media websites.

Now you will also agree with me that DLSRs can’t do this. If you are using a DLSR and you want to share your photographs with your friends then you need to copy those images into a computer from the SD card and then share it from your computer.

Then what is meant by computational photography?

The transition of the technology from analog to digital took place about 5 years ago. And as you know the concept of photography also changed with that transition.

But the twist is over these 5 years technology has shown some unmatched innovations to the world. And from there the concept of computational photography came into play.

So let’s see some of the major computational changes in the world of photography.

Imaging developed by Code, not Optics

The concept of computation photography is very much like the concept of traditional photography. The only difference is that in computation images the pixels are developed by codes and not by optics.

Images captured by Computational Photography are actually a set of programs that are based on algorithms. The software then processes the captured exposure from the lens of a camera and transforms it into a complete image by mathematical method.

This is the reason for the fame of mobile cameras. Mobile manufacturing companies use this technology to develop mobile cameras so that non-professionals can also click extraordinary images.

Another major attribute of computation photography is the use of Artificial Intelligence. As this technology is in the favor of non-professional, so the use of AI has made it easier for the users to click photos under any situations without even changing the camera settings.

Photography for non-photographers

If you want the truth then I can say that the introduction of computation photography has created a disturbance among the community of professional photographers. They are a bit threatened an annoyed after realizing the fact that now everyone can click awesome pictures without any professional training.

But according to my opinion, I feel that mobile photography can take the place of professional photographs. But if you look at the facts with a different perspective then you might realize that computation photography was not introduced as a competitor of professional photography.

It was introduced for business and for generating larger revenue. A camera in a smartphone means that a camera in everyone’s hand. Not all the people who use mobile cameras are pro.

That is why the technology aimed to give satisfactory quality images to the non-professionals by using the technology of Artificial Intelligence.

It is more than just smartphone cameras

Apart from just manufacturing mobile cameras, computation photography possesses many more abilities. It can be used in several fields like

  • scientific research
  • image analysis
  • feature detection
  • face recognition and a lot more.

Digital imagery replaced the concept of developing an image from raw films. In the past also you just won’t be able to perform advanced image analysis on a film. You have to digitalize the image.

That is why as in today all the images are already in a digital format so it becomes easier to perform any task like image analysis and a lot more.

Concluding…

Though computation technology has changed the meaning of photography and has put mobile photography in the front line. But still, the traditional way of photography can never be wiped out.

DLSR manufacturers from all over the world are adapting this competitive photography technology and releasing more and more advanced cameras.

You cannot say that the introduction of this technology has created a competitive behavior between DSLRs and mobile cameras as both of them have completely different functionality and requires different photography skills.
